The standard model of elementary particle physics predicts elastic scattering of neutrinos on nuclei, but for a long time it was not possible to detect it. The basis of the discovery made with the argon core was a 2017 study published in the journal Science, in which the COHERENT team provided the first evidence of the possibility of such a process. But there the neutrino interacted with the larger and heavier nuclei of caesium and iodine. Their recoil was less than that of argon nuclei, which did not allow us to finally solve the problem.
The observation of the interaction of neutrinos with argon, the lightest nucleus for which it has been measured, confirms previous observations on heavier nuclei. And proves the existence of this type of interaction. The results obtained are consistent with the Standard Model. In particular, this work uses data collected over 18 months. Their analysis revealed 159 CEvNS events, which corresponds to the forecast of the Standard Model.

Since neutrinos are electrically neutral and interact very weakly with matter, it took the development of detector technologies to observe this interaction. The development of more sensitive photodetectors was led by Yuri Efremenko, a physicist at the University of Tennessee and the Oak Ridge Laboratory, who also collaborates with MEPhI. The researchers hope that the increased accuracy provided by the new, larger detectors will allow them to see something new, to go beyond the Standard Model, to detect signs of so-called new physics, including the existence of sterile neutrinos that do not participate in the weak interaction.
The COHERENT team uses the world's brightest pulsed accelerator neutron source, SNS. The neutrons that SNS produces for research come from the interaction of a high-energy proton beam with a mercury target. Neutrinos are born in this process as a by-product. To work with them, a special neutrino laboratory was created, called Neutrino Alley. The 24 kg detector called CENNS-10 is located at a distance of 27.5 meters from the neutrino source. It is shielded by layers of lead, copper, and water to eliminate the neutron background.
Larger detectors allow for better high-precision measurements, and the CENNS-10 detector technology is easy to scale by simply adding more liquid argon. In the future, the researchers plan to increase the detector to one ton, to see 25 times more events annually, and then add another ten-ton detector on liquid argon. In addition, various types of detectors are needed for complex neutrino studies. Next year, the laboratory will install a sixteen-kilogram detector based on germanium nuclei, which are larger than argon, but smaller than caesium and iodine.

12 марта будет дан старт работе Байкальского глубоководного нейтринного телескопа, сообщили «Известиям» в Министерстве науки и высшего образования РФ. Установку возводили под патронажем ученых из Объединенного института ядерных исследований (ОИЯИ) и Института ядерных исследований РАН. Нейтринный телескоп позволит обнаружить источники нейтрино сверхвысоких энергий и исследовать эволюцию галактик и Вселенной. Обсерватория должна стать магнитом для талантливых ученых со всего мира, считают в Минобрнауки.

Магнит для ученых
Байкальский глубоководный нейтринный телескоп 12 марта запустит министр науки и высшего образования РФ Валерий Фальков вместе с директором ОИЯИ академиком РАН Григорием Трубниковым, сообщили «Известиям» в министерстве. Эту установку класса мегасайенс строили с 2015 года на 106-м км Кругобайкальской железной дороги на озере Байкал силами международной коллаборации Baikal-GVD. Телескоп возводили под патронажем ученых из Объединенного института ядерных исследований (Дубна) и Института ядерных исследований РАН (Москва). Также вклад в работу внесли специалисты из российских научных центров (ИГУ, НГТУ и др.) и из-за рубежа (Чехии, Словакии и Польши). Детектор нейтрино расположен на расстоянии 3,6 км от берега озера Байкал и погружен на глубину 1,1 км.

Обсерваторию решили построить именно на Байкале по ряду причин. При прохождении через достаточно плотную среду, например воду, нейтрино генерирует черенковское излучение, которое можно зарегистрировать светочувствительными детекторами. В данном случае сыграли свою роль наличие мест в озере Байкал с глубиной более 1 км, расположенных недалеко от берега, способность поглощения и рассеяния света в байкальской воде, а также наличие ледового покрова в течение восьми недель в году, что существенно облегчает развертывание детектора (по сравнению с реализацией аналогичных проектов в океане).

По сравнению с телескопом, который работает на Южном полюсе (IceCube), у байкальского выше точность в определении направления потоков нейтрино, рассказал «Известиям» специалист по физике элементарных частиц, академик РАН Михаил Данилов.

— Кроме того, он находится в другом полушарии и поэтому видит другую половину неба. Таким образом, он является дополнительным детектором, который позволяет расширить границы того, что мы наблюдаем, — сказал ученый.


Космическая обсерватория «Спектр-РГ» впервые осмотрела всё небо
Нейтринный телескоп состоит из сотен светочувствительных фотоумножителей (квазаров), закрепленных на тросах (стрингах) и спущенных в воду южного Байкала на глубину больше километра. Стринги собраны в единую зонтикообразную структуру.
