Vladimir Putin"Putin khuylo!" (Ukrainian: Путiн - ***ло, Russian: Путин - ***ло; IPA: ['putʲɪn xʊj'lo], English meaning: Putin is a dipshit or Putin is a dickhead[1]) is a bilingual Russo-Ukrainian chant popular among football fans all over Ukraine. Initially chanted by FC Metalist Kharkiv fans,[2] it grew into a nation-wide hit in Ukraine during the events of the 2014 Russian military intervention in Ukraine and received broad international coverage.

Language and meaning[edit]The mat (Ukrainian vulgarity) ***ло́ is variously transliterated as huilo, huylo, khuilo, khuylo, or xujlo. Its core is *** (khuy), literally "dick" in both Russian and Ukrainian. In combination with "-lo" it may be translated as "dickhead", "dipshit", "prick"[3] or, more emphatically, "fucker" or "asshole."[4][5] Its words, identical in both Russian and Ukrainian, have been chanted in Ukrainophone cities in the west of the country and largely Russophone cities of eastern and southern Ukraine, as well as in Kiev, the nation's capital.
In May 2014, the Russian slang term entered the English language Urban Dictionary as a synonym for Vladimir Putin.[6][7] This was reported by media outlets like Ukrayinska Pravda[8] and Gazeta.uauk[9] in Ukraine, BelGazeta in Belarus.[10]
The expression is International reception[edit]The song has been sung outside of Ukraine including in Mexico,[27] Japan,[28] U.S.,[29] Canada, Czech republic,[30] Western Europe and so on.[31]
The song caused widespread discontent among some Russians, the diplomatic mission of Russia in Ukraine, and the Russian leadership. However, Geoffrey Pyatt, the US ambassador to Ukraine, wrote on Twitter that the minister had been "seeking to defuse a dangerous situation", calling Deshchytsia "a skilled diplomat and credit to Ukraine."[1]
The song received attention from the world press and has been covered by influential international newspapers such as The Guardian,[1] The Washington Post,[32] Süddeutsche Zeitung,[33] The Wall Street Journal,[15] Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty[34] and Le Monde.[35] It also received coverage from many leading national newspapers such as Gazeta Wyborcza,[36] Lidové noviny,[37] The Atlantic,[38] Israel HaYom,[39] and others.[40][41] The Guardian[42] writes about Putin is a dickhead song that has since (March 2014) become a nationwide (Ukraine) cultural meme.
The Ukrainian television channel TVi and numerous online and printed media also covered the Wikipedia coverage of the song in 22 languages (at the time of publication).[43][44]
Namesakes[edit]Star[edit]Ukrainian astronomers named the star TYC 3541-945-1 Putin - Huilo! in honor of the song, to support astronomical research.[45] It is located between the constellations Cygnus and Lyra. Ukrainian astronomers saw this as a way to get back at Russian President Vladimir Putin for recent Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation.[46][47] The star is believed to be outside Moscow's sphere of influence.[48]
The Irish publication TheJournal.ie reported, "On a clear night, you can see ‘Putin Is A Dickhead’.”[49]
Newspaper[edit]In Zhytomyr, a popular newspaper started using "Putin-khuilo" as their masthead in July 2014. According to the editor, the newspaper implemented this decision at the request of its readers.[50]
